Air courier offers to offset CO2

Crossflight, the express logistics operator, is pursuing a green agenda by helping to offset the CO2 emissions generated by its customers’ deliveries.

The decision to offer a carbon offset delivery service means that Crossflight’s customers now have the option to pay a small surcharge, which is then invested in carbon reduction projects run by Climate Care.

The idea was developed by Crossflight’s managing director Richard Stoughton, who realised that his customers wanted a simple and effective method to offset their carbon footprint and increase their environmental credentials. He syas: ‘Many companies realise that global warming and climate change will affect their markets, and want to take action to become more environmentally responsible. Our surcharge allows customers to help reduce greenhouse gases for their national and international deliveries, while at the same time remaining competitive and helping the planet.’

Air transport is a growing contributor to CO2 emissions, and according to Defra, between 1990 and 2005 emissions from aviation fuel use more than doubled for UK-based international aviation. By 2011, the UK and international express courier market is expected to have grown by 31 per cent according to market research from consultants MBD. While the government is aiming for a 60 per cent CO2 emissions reduction by 2050, it has promised to introduce a climate change bill which will make this target legally binding.

Climate Care offsets CO2 emissions by investing in global clean energy projects, including wind power and rainforest restoration, and state they have delivered over 1½ million tonnes of CO2 reductions since 1997. David Wellington, the managing director of Climate Care UK, confirmed his organisation was ‘delighted’ to be working with Crossflight for their new carbon offset service.
