German food retailer LIDL has selected SSI Schaefer’s case picking system for its logistics centre at Kirchheim/Teck in Germany.

SSI Schaefer has already begun work civil works to expand the centre through the installation of an automated order-picking warehouse. It will project manage and build a high bay warehouse with five aisles holding some 15,000 pallet storage positions equipped with the pallet conveyor technology.

Next to it, a Schaefer Tray System holding 16,000 storage positions on five levels will be built, serving as a buffer to items by layer after the pallets pass through automatic de-palletising in goods receiving. The system stores compact, individual pallet layers on special layer trays allowing quick allocation at the order pick position.

Schaefer’s Case Picking system will also be installed due to its order-related picking of individual packages in parallel multi-access mode, providing optimum efficient order-picking processing.

In view of transport and replenishment in the stores, the system guarantees ideally packed pallets, processing up to 70,000 packages. Despite the high order picking performance, the system ensures the gentle handling of all items. The site is due for completion within two years.
