New European standard for food transport

The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) has agreed to produce a new European standard for the transport of foodstuffs across international borders in insulated and refrigerated vehicles, overriding the existing ATP agreement.

The new standard is aimed at setting minimum performance targets and test protocols for refrigeration units on road transport vehicles as the current ATP standard does not address a number of issues linked to improved technology or increased legislation.

Within the CEN structure national representatives attend international meeting once or twice a year.

The British Standards Institute is the UK representative and will be attending all Working Groups along with its chosen representatives: Fraser Hale (pictured), product development director at Hubbard Products; Daniel Lafley, vice chairman at Transfrigoroute; and Alan Lines, an independent consultant from the body builder sector.

The first meeting of the Working Group (WG13) will be in September in Munich.
